When last have you gone for a drive?
Simple question right? When last though? Where you just hopped in the car and hit the road. And I’m not talking about a 1000km road trip. I’m talking about visiting another nearby town or in my case Worcester.
The place where one can never be too sure about the spelling. A place I usually drive past, but thanks to Matchbox Toys, I was invited to Worcester to “Drive my Dream”. You see, Matchbox makes a host of scale models and collectables and unlike the 600k price tag on the i30N, for less than R100 you can still, drive your dream, albeit on the carpet.
I was lucky that I not only got my dream car in 1/24 scale but also thanks to Suzanne Scholtz and the team, actually experience the real deal too.
At first, I thought it was a strange concept because there was NO way they would be able to get me a car I actually LIKED or dreamt about. Truth be told, I don’t really dream about that many cars.
I first saw the signature Blue i30N at Golden Valley Casino in Worcester. It’s there where we met our tour guide and I would then be given the keys to my all-time favourite car from 2020. To drive around and explore the town as I saw fit, all while being guided to where the cool spots are, and those spots that I might not visit on my own accord. Glass blowing anyone?
Glass blowing done, and I still couldn’t believe I had an I30N parked outside.
My disbelief was short-lived as I slotted the 6-speed manual gearbox into 1st and started exploring more of the town situated just on the other side of the Huguenot Tunnel.
Lunch was had in the Nuy Valley, which is now home to my new favourite wine! We then grabbed some Olive oil from the world-famous Willow Creek Olive Estate. Did you know South Africa grows some of the best olives on the planet? Small pleasures but a gentle reminder that South Africa is filled with tiny little gems less than 100km away in almost any direction.
Since my trip to Worcester, I’ve made the commitment to explore much more of South Africa, and especially my surroundings in Cape Town. Maybe visit that tiny west coast village I’ve always wanted to and do it on a whim.
Why? Because we can. One of the many benefits of living in South Africa (I’m the first to complain about its obvious drawbacks)
Before we left I jumped in the pool at the Sun Internationals Golden Valley Casino. But not before enjoying breakfast and some great service from the staff. One of whom was a car enthusiast and fan of the page! Located just off the highway, Golden Valley is the perfect stopover or location to stay if you’re heading to Worcester for the weekend.
In the coming weeks, I’ll be heading up the coast for a relaxing getaway, again at the fraction of the cost trip out of town. Growing up this is what we were used to, exploring our surroundings, with globalisation, it certainly has become easier to explore elsewhere but local is, and has always been lekker.
And if the fuel cost is STILL too high for you this January, well with Matchbox you can still drive YOUR dream for under R100.
