After weeks of excitement, The BMW M4 had finally arrived, its price inflated to 1.9 Million these days, it joined the much cheaper Audi RS4 in my apartment parking bays. I had however been driving the RS4 hard for the day and was feeling it abit. The 0-100 launches on this car take under 4 seconds every time, and are punishing! (My best was 3.8) I went to bed around 10 am, just like uncle Cyril asked, but before I did I, glanced over at the bright yellow M4, and waved it goodnight.
The next morning early we’d hit the road, and over the next 2 days, we’d be driving some of Cape Towns’ best roads to enjoy these two not-so-obvious rivals.
It’s 6 am and dark, my eyes open suddenly as I realize I have a yet undriven M4 parked downstairs. I message my high school friend and driving partner, Jerome, and ask if he’s keen on that drive. We’d each spend some time behind the wheels of these incredible cars and eventually end up at a skidpan where we’d be shooting some video content.
Before that, however, we’d need to shoot some rolling shots. We called in two very talented young photographers, Simon Luckhoff, and Car Magazines Yan Musi. They would be tasked with capturing the essence of these two cars together.
In these slippery conditions, for me the choice was easy. The RS4 is mostly glued to the street, regardless of the weather. Having said that Audi has engineered the car so that up to 85% of its 331kW can be transferred to the rear wheels. So if you like oversteer, don’t think the Audi can’t deliver.
For those that want a bit more drama, the BMW provides it and more. Visually the car turns heads like a super car. And most agree, that that snout, is something we love to hate at first, then hate to love after some time spent with the Bavarian supercar slayer. The M4 must be incredible on a race track, and for those willing to pay the almost 2 Million rand price tag, a joy to drive on-demand.
Over the two days, we got some incredible shots of the two titans. The Audi is still my favourite out of the two. Not only because it costs around half a million less than the M4, but of its understated looks and incredible acceleration. But given a lonely piece of tarmac and no speed limits, give me the M4 anyways, just make sure I don’t have to pay the installment.
